EvE Online’s Continued Allure?

by Zaal on Aug.25, 2009, under Eve Online

What is it about Eve-Online that drags me back, sometimes kicking and screaming, to New Eden and all it entails?

I was browsing some old RSS feeds and stumbled upon this post by KrazyKinux. I read through it and was prompted to consider my own answer to the question: What brought you in to Eve, what keeps us playing and what brings us back if we leave? (continue reading…)

Java Program: Jump Bridge Fuel Calculator

by Zaal on Aug.18, 2009, under Eve Online, Programming

I found a use for my java programming instruction from the past year: small Eve-Online apps that do calculations I’m not interested in repeating each time I need them done. The first such program is a Jump Bridge fuel calculator.

Quick Background: a jump bridge allows for the instantaneous movement of a ship from one point in space to another. This requires fuel depending on the mass of the ship and the distance to the other side of the jump bridge. Think of it as a wormhole except you have to fuel it.

Eve-Online: The Sandbox

by Zaal on Aug.02, 2009, under Eve Online

Ok, maybe a little dramatic but it does communicate the wide open universe and the number of choices available to the average pilot.

Honestly? I have very rarely been in a situation where another pilot has required my assistance as I was passing by. Not like other MMOs that I’ve played in the past. Games like Everquest, WoW and LOTR:O have all given me situations where I’ve been able to help another player in a virtual life or death scenario. It’s a good feeling to be able to help another player out but it happens very rarely in EVE unless you join a player alliance with 1000′s of other players. Then virtual life or death happens all the time and you need the assistance of all your buddies to survive.

EvE Online: My Continuing Addiction

by Zaal on Jul.31, 2009, under Eve Online

Though I’ve taken breaks from playing Eve from time to time, I always manage to come back. Part of the draw is that the game continues to challenge on a PvP level.

Having said that, I suck at PvP. Alright, that might be too strong a word; I’m very bad at it but the thrill of PvP is such a drug that I don’t feel bad at all losing ships and implants. It’s worth it. Being the hunter and the hunted at the same time. Using what knowledge you have of your ship to try and over power the other guy and his ship. Living in Deklein and being the pets of TCF, we see a lot of activity. People coming in to see if we’re worth our salt. I’m not sure if we’re there yet but we’re working on it.

I still spend a lot of time doing industry stuff: mining, building equipment, exploring space for worm holes and the like. It really is a lot of fun and for anything that might even be remotely interested in a space simulator, you’d be hard pressed to find something of equal worth.

School starts again September 14. How will I get my fix then? ;-)
